FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answer all of your questions

Signs of mental illness can vary widely and differs from person to person. These issues don’t need to be “serious” in order to seek help. Any changes in normal mood and behaviour or disruption in day-to-day activities like at work or school are considered signs of mental illness. Encountering family and relationship issues, feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed; engaging in unhealthy coping habits and addictions, loss of a family member, trauma, suicidal behaviour, and self-injury are some of the other signs that you should seek mental help for.

Other times to seek support can be as simple as performance enhancement, need for mental clarity, or creating harmony between work and life.

Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Just like how we go to doctors for check-ups, our mind also needs to be taken care of. Mental health can affect our daily functioning, relationships, and even physical health. Hence our mental well-being is as important as our physical well-being.

Mental health is not the absence of a mental illness; a person with a healthy mindset can strive for better well-being and happiness.

Counseling can help with various psychological problems which can vary from stress, anxiety, depression, and grief to work and relationship issues, family problems, marital discord, sexual problems, life transitions, and communication issues. Counselling gives counselors the opportunity to identify the problems causing psychological distress.

A benefit of counseling is the cultivation of healthy habits, confidence, happiness, hope, and motivation. It can be a significant source of encouragement in life.

There is no appropriate age to start counselling. Anyone who wishes to seek help through counselling for psychological distress and other problems should be able to start anytime.

All counselling is kept strictly confidential. Client confidentiality is the obligation of any mental health professional to protect their client’s privacy.  A client’s personal details are not made public, published, or discussed with third persons without the client’s consent. Once a client enters into counselling, all information discussed is kept between the counsellor and the client.

Exceptions of confidentiality rules:

  • In case if the client is a threat to themselves or others, the counsellor must warn the person at risk or someone who can keep the client safe.
  • The counsellor also has grounds to break confidentiality if they believe a child or disabled person is being abused.
  • If a client expresses suicidal thoughts, a counsellor may not automatically compromise confidentiality. Hospitalization is usually considered only if a client expresses an intent to act on those thoughts and has a specific suicide plan.
